Recognizing the valuable contribution of Prof. Benito Lim in the field of China Studies, the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies (PACS) launched the Benito Lim Memorial Lectures to give honor to him, his efforts and accomplishments. In partnership with Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran (KAISA) and Philippine Cultural College with the support from the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Association, the second lecture was held on 13 July 2019, at the Kaisa-Angelo King Heritage Center in Intramuros, Manila.

The lecture was opened with a special screening of the Cinemalaya documentary movie, “Honor: Legacy of Jose Abad Santos”, and then followed by two lectures. Prof. Rommel Banlaoi, PACS President, gave a discussion on “Current Chinese Migration to the Philippines: Government Safety Measures and Security Arrangements”. He explained the current trend of Chinese influx in the Philippines and the issues and challenges it brings. He emphasized the need to strengthen the law enforcement cooperation between the Philippines and China to address the safety concerns of not only the Chinese but especially of the Filipinos. On the other hand, Prof. Aileen Baviera, a professor from the University of the Philippines, on her speech entitled, “40 Years of China-watching from the Eyes of a Filipino” shared her experiences and journey as China studies scholar and how Prof. Benito Lim inspired her to work more diligently in the area of China studies. She gave pieces of advice to younger China watchers and may be considered as one of the most important is that “if you must take a side, take the side of the Filipino people.”

Around 100 attendees were present from different universities, organizations, and the Chinese-Filipino community. The 3rd lecture for the series is scheduled on 13 September 2019 at Chiang Kai Shek College. (Check PACS event page for more details.)
