Guidelines of 2021-2022 Grants

I. Rationale

The Philippine Association for Chinese Studies (PACS) is a non-partisan and non-profit professional association of diverse scholars and enthusiasts that seeks to deepen knowledge of China and Chinese among Filipinos in order to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between the Philippines and China.

The association’s aims to:

• To promote, encourage, and support academic studies and research on China and the Chinese among Filipinos through lectures, seminars, publications, and international exchanges.
• To be a primary source of knowledge and expertise on China and the Chinese for the government, business, and academe, especially in regard to the improvement of Philippines-China relations.
• To promote the understanding of the Philippines and the Filipinos among the Chinese and other international partners.

This Call for Applications/Proposals is geared towards achieving the objectives of PACS by granting publication and research initiatives.

II. Grants for the 2021-2022 Cycle

A. Thesis Publication Grant (Php 40,000)
This grant incentivizes recent Master’s graduates or those who had recently defended their thesis in the past three (3) years who are interested to transform their work into publishable outputs.

B. Dissertation Publication Grant (Php 80,000)
This grant incentivizes recent Doctorate graduates or those who had recently defended their dissertation in the past three (3) years who are interested to transform their work into publishable outputs.

C. Senior Research Fellowship (Php 200,000)
This grant is for Masters/Doctorate degree holders who demonstrate competence in conducting research and has an extensive publication record. The duration of the fellowship is limited to a year.

III. Eligibility

Any Filipino, affiliated with a public or private entity, who is a Member of PACS at the time of the closing date for submission of the 2021-2022 Grants. Applicants can contact the PACS Membership committee to avail and assess their membership status via membership@pacs.ph.

IV. Themes & Accepted Topics

• Philippines-China relations
• Bilateral/multilateral solutions to long-term maritime issues in the South China Sea
• the Chinese in the Philippines

V. Expected Outputs

-One (1) article in an indexed journal (the Chinese Studies Journal has the right of first refusal)
-contribution of one (1) commentary for the PACS Viewpoints
-delivery of one (1) discussion/presentation in a PACS organized webinar/seminar/conference

VI. Procedural and Documentary Requirements

  1. Letter of Intent by the applicant and Endorsement signed by the authorized head of the organization/institution for the Senior Research Fellowships. For the Thesis and Dissertation grants, applicants shall submit their Letter of Intent and the adviser shall sign the Endorsement. The letter of Intent and Endorsement shall be addressed to:

  2. A duly accomplished PACS Detailed Research Proposal Form shall be attached for the Senior Research Fellowship. An updated and comprehensive curriculum vitae will be included for the thesis and dissertation grants.

  3. Applicants for the Thesis and Dissertation Grants shall include an abstract of their work duly signed by the adviser.

  4. Application documents are to be sent electronically to info@pacs.ph on or before November 25, 2021, 11:59 pm (PST).

Announcement of Calls for Proposals/Applications: September 25, 2021
Closing Date for Submissions: November 25, 2021, 11:59 PM (PST)
Application/Proposal Evaluation Period: November 26-30, 2021
Notification of Successful Applicants: December 01, 2021

Duration of Grant: One (1) year
