A recent Bloomberg (May 2018) report says that an estimated 100,000 migrants, mostly Chinese, have flooded Manila since 2016. This brings the rise of real estate demand and prices in the capital. In addition, offshore gambling companies that cater to overseas Chinese punters are rising in number and bring more Chinese as workers to the Philippines.

The case cited by the report is only a fraction of the Chinese migrants in the Philippines. In the past recent years, the number of Chinese citizens has been at the top of the Bureau of Immigration’s report with the most number of nationals who have acquired immigrant and non-immigrant visas. On the other hand, they are also on the top in the listing of undocumented migrants doing illicit activities in the country.

In this respect, the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies (PACS), in partnership with Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran (KAISA), will hold an FGD on 4 Sept 2018 to tackle the rise of China, which brings the influx of overseas Chinese (new Chinese migrants) in different countries. The discussion will focus on its impact on the Philippines, in general, and to the Tsinoy community, in particular.
